Morning and Evening, Charles Haddon Spurgeon:
Favorite passage:
This passage from Spurgeon has been my source for inspiration over the years. This passage best exemplifies my life; my life, my soul has been turned many times. I am still in need of deep deep cooking by the Lord. I pray that the Lord will cook me deeply so as to leave me internally well done and not full of soft gooey sin. This may be my favorite writing of all the commentaries and books I have ever read next to the Bible. I am including the whole passage in my blog for your edification and because it is so dear to my heart.
Morning, June 23
“Ephraim is a cake not turned.”
Hosea 7:8
A cake not turned is uncooked on one side; and so Ephraim was, in many respects, untouched by divine grace: though there was some partial obedience, there was very much rebellion left. My soul, I charge thee, see whether this be thy case. Art thou thorough in the things of God? Has grace gone through the very centre of thy being so as to be felt in its divine operations in all thy powers, thy actions, thy words, and thy thoughts? To be sanctified, spirit, soul, and body, should be thine aim and prayer; and although sanctification may not be perfect in thee anywhere in degree, yet it must be universal in its action; there must not be the appearance of holiness in one place and reigning sin in another, else thou, too, wilt be a cake not turned.
A cake not turned is soon burnt on the side nearest the fire, and although no man can have too much religion, there are some who seem burnt black with bigoted zeal for that part of truth which they have received, or are charred to a cinder with a vainglorious Pharisaic ostentation of those religious performances which suit their humour. The assumed appearance of superior sanctity frequently accompanies a total absence of all vital godliness. The saint in public is a devil in private. He deals in flour by day and in soot by night. The cake which is burned on one side, is dough on the other.
If it be so with me, O Lord, turn me! Turn my unsanctified nature to the fire of thy love and let it feel the sacred glow, and let my burnt side cool a little while I learn my own weakness and want of heat when I am removed from thy heavenly flame. Let me not be found a double-minded man, but one entirely under the powerful influence of reigning grace; for well I know if I am left like a cake unturned, and am not on both sides the subject of thy grace, I must be consumed forever amid everlasting burnings.

Have you read any of Charles Stanley books? I like his books almost as much as I like Charles Spurgeons books.

Hello Darcie,
Yes I have read some Charles Stanley. I like his sermons.
I really like the classics. I love to read the Lord’s words in the fine language and articulation that we use to use. I love the concise and clear poetic words of Spurgeon and Oswald Chambers. I enjoy the King James Version Bible. One of my favorite Bible commentators is Matthew Henry. I have to put John Darby in there as well.
And for modern guys I really like J. Vernon McGee.
He has a style that is unique, down to earth and real.
Someday I plan to complete this page and write my commentaries on the commentaries.
God Bless

Yes,I watch Charles Stanley every chance I get and I do enjoy his books. I also use the KJV.I have to say that I do not know J. Vernon McGee. The Bible is the best reading for me. IF I don’t understand a part of the passage,I call my mom.She is 80 years young and been in church her whole life. I couldn’t have asked for a better mom,my dad passed when I was only 24,still miss him terribly.Anyway I do hope the christian people of this nation will know who to vote for on NOV 5th. I honestly can’t believe that a true christian could vote for Obama or Hillary but I don’t know their hearts personally. You really should go on with the commentaries, hopefully it will help to bring more christians togather.Posts like your is hard to find.KEEP WRITING.
