Obama’s bounce smaller than others

Barack Obama’s post-Democratic National Convention bounce in the polls appears to be slightly smaller than the norm of past conventions, and it’s gradually depreciating.

The Gallup daily tracking poll has found that since the conclusion of the convention, Obama has risen 4 percentage points in the polls, to lead McCain 49 percent to 43 percent today. That’s a slightly smaller uptick in the polls than the 5- to 6-point bounce earned by a typical party nominee, by Gallup’s measure, since 1964. Obama and McCain were evenly split at 45 percentage points apiece prior to the Democratic convention, according to Gallup.

That outcome comes despite Obama’s speech before more than 80,000 people at Invesco Field in Denver on Thursday night, a political event that was also seen by about 40 million television viewers. It also comes as the Republican convention quietly got under way in St. Paul, and the national media gaze focuses southward to Hurricane Gustav.

Daily tracking polls by Gallup and Rasmussen Reports demonstrate that Obama has taken his greatest lead since July, if not the general election. But while Obama’s support remains significantly stronger than weeks ago, it appears that the post-convention bounce he earned may have already peaked.

Here is how they act in our political cluture.

ST. PAUL (Reuters) – Police in riot gear battled hundreds of protesters with pepper spray and smoke bombs and arrested 130 people on Monday at the start of the Republican presidential convention.

Officers on horseback, motorcycles and bicycles chased a group of rock- and bottle-throwing protesters who broke off from a peaceful march of up to 10,000 people through downtown St. Paul.

Protesters, some hiding their faces with black kerchiefs, smashed shop windows, overturned garbage cans and vandalized police cars. Some pushed a flaming dumpster into a car with police in it, officers and witnesses said.

Police said 130 people had been arrested. The charges ranged from trespassing to property damage and assault, a spokeswoman said. One officer was punched in the back and another was overcome by the heat, St. Paul police chief John Harrington said.

Demonstrators marched from the Minnesota state capitol to the heavily barricaded Xcel Center, where John McCain accepts the Republican presidential nomination later this week. Public safety officials put the crowd at 8,000 to 10,000.

Most protesters demanded an end to the Iraq war, although their causes ranged from increased rights for immigrants to changing U.S. policy in Ethiopia. T-shirts backing McCain’s Democratic rival Barack Obama were common.

Some carried signs supporting politicians like Republican Ron Paul, a libertarian-leading Texas congressman and former McCain opponent, and Ralph Nader, a consumer activist running for president as an independent. (More)

RNC protest update: Spitting, rock-throwing, poison-spraying, and Cub Scout-harassing

By Michelle Malkin • September 2, 2008 02:00 AM

It’s starting to get a little ugly in the Twin Cities. We’ve got reports of buses vandalized and targeted with flying sandbags; delegates spat on and abused by rock-throwers; and Cubs Scouts harassed.

But first, a reminder of my warning last week about the rabble-rousers now causing trouble at the RNC. Here’s what I wrote:

Same as at the DNC: A bust.

Losers:

Outside the Xcel Center, police used pepper spray and arrested five protesters among a crowd of about 2,000 participating in an anti-war march. The crowd was far smaller than the 50,000 march organizers had hoped for.

St. Paul police spokesman Tom Walsh said the five were arrested for lighting a trash bin on fire.

Separately, dozens of self-described anarchists wearing black clothing ran through the streets a few blocks from the march site.

Update: Jim Hoft reports on a sandbag attack on the bus he was riding.

Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 12:27 PM This Reuters story caps off 72 hours of shame for the leftosphere and their pals in the MSM who trafficked in wretched rumor about Sarah Palin and her family. This led to the breach in the family’s private life, and to an extent that should appal everyone. The children of candidates and officials should be off limits, even if the nutters declare they are not. I even understood the MSM’s reluctance to pursue the Edwards story because of the impact on Edwards’ family.

I applaud the Palin for their candor and their decision to be compleletly transparent with the public, and expect the vast majority of decent Americans of all political stripes will respect their wish to keep the young couple out of the news. This is hardly a rare story, though it is always a difficult one for families to work through. In the end it just means that Sarah Palin will not only be the first woman and mother to be vice president, but also the fist grandmother to hold the office as well. Here is the statement of Sarah and Todd Palin:
